Abstract:
Provided is a liquid crystal composition satisfying at least one of the characteristics including high upper-limit temperature of the nematic phase, low lower-limit temperature of the nematic phase, low viscosity, appropriate optical anisotropy, large negative dielectric anisotropy, large resistivity, high ultraviolet stability, and high heat stability, or having an appropriate balance between at least two of the above characteristics. Also provided is an AM element having characteristics such as short response time, high voltage holding ratio, low threshold voltage, high contrast ratio, and long life. A liquid crystal composition having negative dielectric anisotropy and containing as a first component a specific compound having high stability with respect to ultraviolet rays, and a liquid crystal display element containing the composition. The composition may contain as a second component a specific compound having large negative dielectric anisotropy, as a third component a specific compound having a high upper-limit temperature or low viscosity, and as an additive component a specific compound having polymerizable groups.
