Provided is a film for protecting polarizing elements which has excellent adhesion of the polyester film to a polyvinyl alcohol resin layer, e.g., a polarizing element or an adhesive applied to the polarizing element, is capable of accommodating thickness reductions in liquid-crystal display devices, and does not cause a deterioration in visibility due to iridescent unevenness. The film for protecting polarizing elements comprises a polyester film and a coating layer formed on at least one surface thereof, and is characterized in that the polyester film has a retardation of 3,000-30,000 nm and the coating layer comprises a polyvinyl alcohol resin and a polyester resin, and that the surface of the coating layer has a nanophase separation structure which comprises a phase constituted of the polyvinyl alcohol resin that has aggregated and a phase constituted of the polyester resin that has aggregated and in which the areal proportion of the polyvinyl alcohol phase is 30% or higher but less than 99%.
