The present application relates to the field of communications. Disclosed are a method and apparatus for keeping a user terminal alive. The method provides a solution of keeping a user terminal alive in a CU-separated broadband access gateway. The method is applied to a broadband access gateway comprising a control plane entity and a user plane entity, the broadband access gateway is used for enabling a user terminal to access a network, and the method is executed by the user plane entity. The method comprises: sending a detection packet to the user terminal on the basis of a preconfigured parameter pre-acquired by the user plane entity; and if a detection response packet sent by the user terminal is not received within a preset duration, sending a detection failure message to the control plane entity. The detection packet is used for checking whether a communication link between the user terminal and the user plane entity is faulty, and the detection failure message is used for instructing the control plane entity to perform offline processing on the user terminal.
