Title:
METHOD FOR DELIVERING BENZIDINE PROSTAGLANDINS BY INHALATION
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2000/054758
Kind Code:
A2
Abstract:
A method of delivering benzidene prostaglandins to a patient by inhalation is discussed. A benzidene prostaglandin known as UT-15 has unexpectedly superior results when administered by inhalation compared to parenterally administered UT-15 in sheep with induced pulmonary hypertension.

Claims:
What is claimed is:
1. A method of delivering to a mammal in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a benzidene prostaglandin comprising administering to said mammal by inhalation a formulation which provides a therapeutically effective amount of a benzidene prostaglandin.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein said benzidene prostaglandin is inhaled in an aerosolized form.
3. The method of claim 2, wherein said benzidene prostaglandin is UT15.
4. The method of claim 3, wherein said aerosolized form comprises droplets less than 10 micrometers in diameter, said droplets comprising said UT15 in a suitable pharmacologicallyacceptable liquid carrier.
5. The method of claim 1, wherein the mammal is a human.
6. A method for treating pulmonary hypertension in a mammal comprising delivering to said mammal an effective amount of UT15 or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester by inhalation.
7. The method of claim 6, wherein said UT15 is inhaled in an aerosolized form.
8. The method of claim 7, wherein said aerosolized form comprises droplets less than 10 micrometers in diameter, said droplets comprising said compound in a suitable pharmacologicallyacceptable liquid carrier.
9. The method of claim 6, wherein said UT15 is inhaled in powder form comprising particles less than 10 micrometers in diameter.
10. The method of claim 1, wherein the formulation comprises a sustained release form of a benzidene prostaglandin.
11. The method of claim 6, wherein said UT15 is a sustained release form.

In fact, the term"benzidene prostaglandins" mentioned in those claims, contains so many options and variables, that a lack of clarity and conciseness within the meaning of Article 6 PCT arises to such an extent as to render a meaningful search of the claims impossible. Consequently, the search has been carried out for those parts of the application which do appear to be clear and concise, namely the compounds mentioned in the description at page 2 and the examples (UT-15), and page 9 (formula (I)).

The applicant's attention is drawn to the fact that claims, or parts of claims, relating to inventions in respect of which no international search report has been established need not be the subject of an international preliminary examination (Rule 66.1 (e) PCT). The applicant is advised that the EPO policy when acting as an International Preliminary Examining Authority is normally not to carry out a preliminary examination on matter which has not been searched. This is the case irrespective of whether or not the claims are amended following receipt of the search report or during any Chapter II procedure.
