Disclosed is a method comprising: a reaction mechanism analysis step (S1) in which elementary reactions constituting chemical reactions among a plurality of initial substances including the components of a fuel are analyzed to acquire data on the elementary reactions of the fuel; and an octane number determination step (S2) in which a simulation is conducted on the basis of the elementary reactions of the fuel to thereby calculate the combustion characteristics of the fuel and determine the octane number of the fuel on the basis of the combustion characteristics thereof.
