Various embodiments provide a method and a device capable of supporting various display schemes by using an electronic device and/or a glasses-type wearable electronic device (e.g., AR glasses) in augmented reality (AR). An AR providing device for an AR service according to various embodiments may comprise a display and a processor. The processor may provide contents through an AR screen. The processor may detect a designated external object through the AR screen while providing the contents. The processor may determine a display mode for providing the contents, on the basis of detection of the designated external object. The processor may perform control to display the contents through a display of the designated external object on the basis of the determined display mode. The processor may perform control to display the contents on the AR screen through a virtual display area associated with the designated external object on the basis of the determined display mode. Various embodiments are possible.
