Abstract:

[Problem] To provide a poppet valve and a method of forming a face thereof in which work hardening occurs while maintaining compressive residual stress to a prescribed depth from the face surface or deeper without causing coarsening of crystal grains in both a valve body and the face, and in which weld defects can be eliminated. [Solution] The method of forming a poppet valve face comprises a step of forming a built-up portion (4) in a circumferential shape on a poppet valve body (2), comprising a shaft (1b) and a plug (2a) at one end thereof, by welding onto the plug (2a), and a step of forming a face surface (6) with a prescribed aperture angle in the built-up portion (4). A flat face (5) is formed in the built-up portion (4) by removal machining the surface and the face surface (6) is formed by deforming the flat face (5). This processing applies a uniform surface pressure to a face (2b) of a poppet valve in a range from cold to warm that is a temperature range less than the recrystallization temperature. Thus, the aforementioned problem can be solved and the durability of the face can be improved.
