Abstract:
A system, method and computer-readable media are disclosed for a graphics subsystem in a computing device. The graphics subsystem has a rendering model and transport model that enable communication with a display server which is responsible for displaying graphics on the screen of the device. The rendering model features a hierarchy of views, where a view is responsible for a certain portion of the screen. Commands, events and other data are communicated between the display server and the view hierarchy using render streams which are transient, one-way conduits between the display server and the view hierarchy. Views only communicate with the display server when needed; there is no persistent communication means between them or between the views and any central authority. The method aspect of the invention comprises a display control module, such as a display server, creating a transport object for communicating data related to a graphics operation to a view hierarchy. The module transmits the data to a root view within the view hierarchy. Upon processing of the data by the view hierarchy, the display control module receives reply or return data from the view hierarchy that changes the graphics on the computing device screen.
