Title:
METHOD FOR HANDLING SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2005/001849
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
Actually, at the end stage of an APS fuel cycle a spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is processed in such a way that high-level wastes are produced. Modern state of art does not guarantee against radionuclides proliferation. The main danger results from Sr-90, Cs-37 and from transuranium actinides. The aim of said invention is to use the main components of the SNF radiochemical processing in the form of a raw material and to develop on said basis an APS closed fuel cycle, which is blocked against more dangerous radionuclides and Pu. The inventive method consists in transmuting Sr-90 and Cs-37 into stable isotopes by means of photonuclear reactions which are produced by gyrosynchrotron $g(g) radiation, using the thus produced photoneutrons for actinide fission and reproducing fissionable nucleuses in spent U. It is proved that in case of such approach, a breeding ratio can be equal to 1, a transmutation and breeding speed is equal to a fuel-burning up rate in the APS reactors and the occurred fuel consumption is compensated by an actinide nucleus fission energy. In such a way, the radioactivity of stored APS wastes can be reduced by 5 orders of magnitude, the U circulation in the fuel can be increased by 30 times and fissionable fuel can be bred without using Pu. The transmutation of Sr-90, Cs-137 and actinides elimination on the end stage of the fuel cycle results in a saving which is supplemented by a bred fuel cost. When breeding ratio is equal to 1, the sum of said economy and bred fuel cost can be greater than an operating coast, thereby making said method for spent fuel processing advantageous.
