Abstract:
This method for manufacturing a porous glass base material for optical fibers involves: supplying, while moving a target rod and a burner for glass fine particle synthesis back and forth relative to each other, a glass material gas and a combustion gas to the burner to deposit the synthesized glass fine particles on the outer circumference of the target rod. When synthesizing a glass fine particle deposition layer at a portion where 0.5L≤R≤0.8L (L [mm] represents the final outer diameter of the porous glass base material for optical fibers to be manufactured, and R [mm] represents the outer diameter of the glass fine particle deposition in mid-course of manufacturing) is satisfied, V (V [mm/min.] represents a relative movement speed of the target rod and the burner) and r (r [rpm] represents the rotation rate of the target rod) are gradually reduced while the fluctuation of a sweep pitch P [mm] of the burner represented by V/r is kept within a range of ±10% of the central value.
