Title:
METHOD OF MANUFACTURING WELDED CAN BODIES
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1986/003152
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
In order to manufacture a welded can body by electric resistance mush-seam welding an overlapped portion (12) of end sections (11a, 11b) of blanks, which constitute a can body-forming member (11), by using line electrodes (15, 16) and inner and outer electrode rolls (13, 14), a main flat portion (17) and a side projection (18), which is joined to this main flat portion (17) via an inclined surface (18a), are formed on the surface of at least one line electrode (15 or 16) which is opposed to the overlapped portion (12). The side projection (18) extends in the length-wise direction of the line electrodes (15, 16). When starting a welding operation, the can body-forming member (11) is fed so that an end surface (11a1) of the end section (11a) of the overlapped portion (12) is positioned above the part of the main flat portion (17) which is in the vicinity of the inclined surface (18a), or above the inclined surface (18a). Consequently, the material in the vicinity of the end surface (11a1) is fluidized plastically in the circumferentially outward direction along the inclined surface (18a) to form a gently-inclined stepped portion (2).
