Disclosed in the present invention is a method for preparing a PENT copolyester. The method comprises: A) firstly performing transesterification reaction on bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate and dimethyl p-naphthalene to generate bi(hydroxyethyl) p-naphthalene biterephthalate; and B) performing melt polycondensation reaction on the excess BHET monomer in the transesterification reaction system and the generated bi(hydroxyethyl) p-naphthalene biterephthalate to obtain the PENT copolyester. By means of the present invention, high conversion rate and high proportion addition of dimethyl p-naphthalene are realized, so that the prepared PENT copolyester has excellent heat resistance, can ensure that the content of DEG therein is lower than 1.5% and the b value of the color value can be smaller than 3, and has an excellent gas barrier property. The copolyester has a broad application prospect in the fields of carbonated drinks, beer, baby food and medicine packaging.
