Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method for recycling a cathode active material and a cathode active material recycled thereby and, more specifically, to a method for recycling a cathode active material and a cathode active material recycled thereby, the method comprising the steps of: (a) heat-treating a waste cathode, which includes a current collector and a cathode active material layer coated thereon, at 300 to 650℃ in air to recover a cathode active material; (b) allowing the recovered cathode active material to be precipitated in a basic aqueous solution of a lithium compound for 10 to 40 minutes; (c) after the precipitating, removing a supernatant and obtaining a precipitate; and (d) adding a lithium precursor to the dried precipitate, followed by annealing at 400 to 1000℃ in air. The present invention has an effect of providing a method for recycling a cathode active material and a cathode active material recycled thereby, wherein the method greatly improves the rate performance of a battery by removing a fine powder generated from the recycled cathode active material, is eco-friendly due to the non-use of acid and thus requires no neutralization and wastewater treatment to thereby reduce process costs, recycles the cathode active material as it is without decomposition thereof to result in no metal elements to be discarded, can recover the current collector due to the non-dissolution thereof, is safe without the generation of toxic gas or the risk of explosion due to the non-use of an organic solvent, and is suitable for mass production by using easy-to-manage processes, such as heat treatment and precipitation; and the cathode active material has excellent electrochemical performance, resistance characteristics, and capacity characteristics.
