The invention relates to methods for additionally securing payment cards and can be used in systems for carrying out expense transactions by means of said payment cards. The invention consists in switching payment cards from active mode to passive mode (Fig. 3). Prior to carrying out expense transactions by means of a payment card, the owner thereof switches it into said active mode (Fig. 4). The switching of the payment card to active mode is carried out by identifying a message which contains data about a command, a communications device serial number and an electronic signature and is transmitted to a control station by the communications device (a mobile telephone, a smartphone, etc.) of the payment card owner. Once the expense transactions are complete, the payment card is switched to passive mode either by the owner thereof (Fig. 6) or automatically. Said invention makes it possible to increase the additional protection of a payment card, thereby substantially reducing the possibility of carrying out expense transactions by external persons using the payment card without the authorisation of the owner thereof.
