Abstract:
The purpose of the present disclosure is to make it possible to acquire the combining efficiency between modes at a connection point of a multi-mode optical fiber. According to the present disclosure: pulsed pump light is allowed to be incident, in a basic mode or a first higher-order mode, from one end of an optical fiber to be measured, which is such that two optical fibers are connected in series; probe light having an optical frequency difference from pump light within a Brillouin frequency shift band is allowed to be incident, in the basic mode or the first higher-order mode, from the other end; a Brillouin gain distribution is measured, the distribution being related to distance of the transmitted-light intensity of probe light emitted from the one end on the side where the pump light was incident; the transmittance at the connection point of the optical fiber to be measured is acquired from the Brillouin gain distribution; the transmittance, and a Brillouin gain coefficient unique to the optical fiber to be measured, are substituted into an equation representing the transmittance at the connection point, the transmittance being produced in the Brillouin gain distribution of each mode; and the combining efficiency between modes at the connection point is calculated by solving simultaneous equations.
