Abstract:
A method for treating radioactive waste is provided whereby not only the level of radiation dose can be reduced to such a degree that the treated radioactive waste can be reused as a landfill material, etc. but also the leakage of any radionuclide into the soil is prevented. The method comprises: a primary treatment step in which a radiation-shielding agent that consists of or consists mainly of a Ca-based inorganic compound is used to convert radioactive waste to radioactive waste (primarily treated object) in which the level of radiation dose has been reduced to or below a standard value; and a secondary treatment step in which the primarily treated object is heated and melted and is then cooled to form vitreous granules in which the radionuclides have been confined.
