Abstract:

The present invention pertains to a multicore fiber for carrying out communication by means of light up to an xth-order LP mode (where x is an integer of 1 or greater) in a communication band. Each of a plurality of cores 11 propagate light up to an (x+1)th-order LP mode. The inter-core distance Λ is the distance at which the crosstalk of light up to the xth-order LP mode is -40 dB/km or less and the crosstalk of light up to the (x+1)th-order LP mode -30 dB/km or greater. The distance Tc between the outermost core 11 in cladding 20 and a cover layer 30 is the distance at which the excessive loss due to absorption of light up to the xth-order LP mode in the cover layer is 0.001 dB/km or less and the excessive loss due to absorption of light up to the (x+1)th-order LP mode in the cover layer is 3 dB/km or greater.
