Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing: an optical element that reflects light of a specific wavelength by utilizing a waveguide-mode resonance phenomenon generated by a liquid crystal diffraction element, the optical element being capable of narrowing the reflection wavelength; and an optical sensor including this optical element. This optical element has a liquid crystal layer formed using a composition that contains a liquid crystal compound. The liquid crystal layer has a liquid crystal alignment pattern in which an optical axis derived from the liquid crystal compound varies its orientation while continuously rotating in at least one in-plane direction. The liquid crystal layer has a resonance structure and is formed by fixing the cholesteric liquid crystalline phase.
