Abstract:
Provided is an optical modulation element which makes it possible to reproduce an optical image with a specific color other than iridescence when white light is incident, without having to provide a layer for selectively transmitting or reflecting a specific wavelength band; also provided is an information recording medium provided with such an optical modulation element. Also provided are: an optical modulation element which makes it possible to vividly reproduce a desired optical image with reduced impact of zeroth-order diffracted light; and an information recording medium provided with such an optical modulation element. This optical modulation element is provided with a factor element for reproducing an optical image by modulating the phase of incident reproduction light, the factor element having a textured surface. The maximum diffraction efficiency Dmax in a wavelength band of 380 to 780 nm in the wavelength distribution of the diffraction efficiency of first-order diffracted light and in the wavelength distribution of the diffraction efficiency of negative first-order diffracted light for the factor element forms a maximum value having a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 200 nm or less in the wavelength distribution of the diffraction efficiency including said maximum diffraction efficiency Dmax.
