Abstract:
The present invention provides an optical modulator with low power consumption and a high-frequency range, an optical modulator module and a method for driving the optical modulator. An optical modulation unit (110) has an optical waveguide (112) and a plurality of phase modulation electrodes (113). The phase modulation electrodes (113) are formed side by side on the optical waveguide (112) in the light propagation direction, and are electrically isolated from each other. The optical waveguide (112) has an n-InP layer (132), an i-MQW layer (133) and a p-InP layer (134). The n-InP layer (132) is formed on a mounting substrate (111) and a wiring layer (116), and a bias voltage (Vbias) is applied thereto. The i-MQW layer (133) is formed on a layer above the n-InP layer (132). The p-InP layer (134) is formed on a layer above the i-MQW layer (133), and a modulation signal is applied thereto via the plurality of phase modulation electrodes (113). The modulation signal varies over a prescribed voltage range.
