Abstract:
This optical modulator, which is provided with, on the same substrate: a bias electrode to which a dither signal is applied; and an optical detector which monitors an optical signal propagating in an optical waveguide, performs stable bias control by improving detection accuracy with which a dither-signal component intensity is detected by the optical detector. The optical modulator is provided with: a substrate (102) having a piezoelectric effect; an optical waveguide (116a, etc.) formed on the substrate; a bias electrode (158a, etc.) that controls an optical wave propagating in the optical waveguide; and an optical detector (168a, etc.) that is formed on the substrate and that monitors an optical signal propagating in the optical waveguide, wherein at least one suppression means (190, etc.) that suppresses a surface acoustic wave propagating from the bias electrode to the optical detector is disposed, on the substrate, between a region in which the bias electrode is formed and a portion in which the optical detector is disposed.
