Title:
OPTICAL MODULATOR
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2014/157456
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide an optical modulator such that increase in chip size is suppressed, and optical/electrical signal crosstalk as well as high-frequency loss caused by a substrate coupling mode are suppressed. The optical modulator has a substrate on which optical waveguides (400 - 403) and modulation electrodes (900) are formed, said modulation electrodes (900) modulating light waves propagated in the optical waveguides. The optical modulator is characterized in that the portion (B1) of the substrate where modulation is carried out by means of the modulation electrodes is formed from a plurality of substrate portions (200, 201) for modulation which are spaced apart from each other, and each substrate portion for modulation has a low permittivity part (500) disposed in a portion of the boundary with another substrate portion for modulation, said low permittivity part (500) having a permittivity lower than the substrate material of the substrate portions for modulation.
