Abstract:
Provided is an optical modulator which suppresses occurrence of a phenomenon, such as a resonance mode, in a recessed portion of a casing containing a flexible circuit board therein, and which has improved wide band characteristics. This optical modulator having an optical modulation element contained in a casing, is characterized by having a flexible circuit board 6 connected to at least a portion of an electric line to an external circuit board 7, and by being arranged on the external circuit board, wherein: a recessed portion (a region indicated by a dotted line D) containing the flexible circuit board therein is formed at a portion, in the outer bottom surface of the casing, where the flexible circuit board is connected and arranged; and the optical modulator is provided with a means (for example, an uneven shape 21) for suppressing a resonance mode, etc., so as to prevent occurrence of a microwave/millimeter-wave resonance mode or parallel plate mode among a surface A of the recessed portion facing the flexible circuit board, an electric wiring section B provided on the flexible circuit board so as to overlap the surface A in plan view, and an electric wiring section C provided on the external circuit board so as to overlap the surface A in plan view.
