Abstract:

The present invention provides an optical waveguide wherein the circuit size is not enlarged, circuit design and circuit manufacture are not complicated, and insertion loss can be reduced when light is incident from a slab waveguide to an arrayed waveguide or when light is incident from the arrayed waveguide to the slab waveguide. The present invention is an optical waveguide characterized by comprising: a slab waveguide (1) formed with a diffraction grating (GP) or (GA); an arrayed waveguide (2) connected to a position on which a bright interference portion of a self image of the diffraction grating (GP) or (GA) is formed; and a refractive index change region (DV) formed between the slab waveguide (1) and the arrayed waveguide (2), having the average of the refractive indexes in a refractive index distribution of the direction substantially perpendicular to the light propagation direction which averagely increases from the slab waveguide (1) side to the arrayed waveguide (2) side, and having the average of the refractive indexes in a refractive index distribution of the direction substantially parallel to the light propagation direction which increases on a central axis of the arrayed waveguide (2).
