Abstract:
Disclosed is a photoelectrochemical cell (1) for decomposing water by irradiation of light and generating hydrogen, which is provided with: a conductive substrate; a first electrode (an optical semiconductor electrode (3)) which is arranged on a first main surface of the conductive substrate and contains an optical semiconductor; a second electrode (a counter electrode (4)) which is arranged on the first main surface of the conductive substrate in a region where the first electrode is not arranged; an electrolyte solution which contains water and comes into contact with the surface of the first electrode and the surface of the second electrode; a partition wall (5) which is so formed as to extend along the moving direction of a gas generated on the surface of the second electrode and separates the upper region of the surface of the second electrode from the upper region of the surface of the first electrode, and which is formed from a material that allows ions permeate therethrough, while suppressing permeation of gases; and a container (2) for housing the conductive substrate, the first electrode, the second electrode, the electrolyte solution and the partition wall.
