Description:
PLASMA APPLICATION FOR WIND TURBINE BLADES

TECHNICAL FIELD

The invention is related to the plasma application to wind turbine that is used an alternative energy.

The invention is especially related to the wind turbine blade that has plasma in the plasma positioning slit that has been craved on the leading edge of the wind turbine blade.

PREVIOUS TECHNIQUE

Today, the need for alternative and renewable energy resources has been significantly increased as a result of rapid consumption of energy resources and increase in environmental pollution. Wind turbines are one of the alternative energy resources that convert wind's kinetic energy to mechanical energy and then to electrical energy.

The most important factors that change the energy generation and the efficiency of the wind turbines are the number of turbine blades and the blade structure. Blades are the essential parts of the turbines and provides mechanic energy by transmitting the wind to rotor.

I n order to maximize the energy provided from the wind the formation of the shape of the blades is important. That's why the blade design and production is a complex process. The complexity arises from variety of the design, formation and materials of the blade. The ultimate goal in the production of the blades is optimization and while optimizing the most important criteria is the aerodynamic structure as production of energy is defined according to the aerodynamic structure. Blade efficiency mechanisms and applications directly effects the efficiency of the wind turbine.

The number on wind turbine blades differ as; mono blade wind turbines, double blade wind turbines, triple blade wind turbines and multi-blade wind turbines. Generally top curve has a different form than the bottom curve of the blade's profile. The reason behind that is to emanate different fluid velocity in the top and bottom curves. Different fluid velocity results in differential pressure between the top and bottom of the blade. Thus ensures ascending force from high pressure to low pressure. Ascending force and resultant force, drag force and resultant force are shown in Figure-3

FD- Drag Force which is within streamwise (this force is always parallel to flow)

FL -Ascending Force which is cross-stream

FD and FL- Resultant force which is rotating to turbine

RESEARCHES ON WIND TURBINE BLADES WITH EXISTING TECHNIQUE

The studies in the current techniques show that with the ionization of the gas to plasma phase has changed the air flows and experiments determined that it is extremely advantageous. I.e. in 1970s the experiments on aircraft blades conducted in Russian A.F. loffe Physico-Technical Research Institute showed that a matter that moves in plasma with a hypersonic speed has 3 times less atmosphere resistance than its normal atmospheric nominal resistance. This phenomenon attracted scientists therefore lots of studies had been conducted on aircraft blades, helicopter and wind turbine blades since then.

To minimize the friction force that occurs during the flow of the air through the blade, the air layer that is close to the turbine blade should flow laminar and 'smooth' with steady flow lines. In real environment, the air layer on the surface breaks easily and diverge from the blade surface. As a result, a turbulence that triples the resistance towards blade's movement occurs. The researches worked long on preventing turbulence and inserted two electrodes that has electricity isolation film on the upper plaque of the blade. From then researchers long used this phenomenon in different industries.

After forming of the plasma, the uninsulated electrode pushes the plasma and the ionic wind which flows down and backwards from the blade forms. When the blade reaches lOm/h speed, the movement speed of air on the surface of the blade accelerates and it probably hinders air layer break on the surface of the blade by the help of this ionic wind flow.

Plasma

Science enounced four fundamental states of matter: solid, liquid, gas and plasma. First three states of matter are known by researches because they are the basis of life on Earth and these are confected %0,1 of the Universe. Plasma has a separate selected position among the three other states of matter and is open space energy source. Plasma exist on Earth rarely and it appears only as lightning.

Plasma is the separation of molecules into atoms and ions. The term was first introduced by Nobel-winning chemist Irving Langmuir in the 1927s. and accepted as fourth state of matter.

Plasma is among the priority areas in developing countries, it is known that plasma is widely used for military and civil purposes. Plasma is used in energy, metallurgy, medicine, textile, artificial diamond production, space, automobile and aircraft industries, etc.

THE AIMS OF THE INVENTION

The aim of the invention is using plasma technology for wind turbine blades as a new technology to increase the energy efficiency of the wind turbines. This invention can applicable for all blade types which was designed for wind turbine and in this invention, plasma application will be applied not on the surface of blade but into the blade for the first time.

The most important aim of the invention is minimizing the resistance that occurs by the movement of the blade on the blade's leading edge and effects the turning speed of the blade by opening a special slit on the leading edge of the blade and inserting plasma to the slit.

Another aim of the invention is forming the plasma inside the blade by taking into account the forces that occur on the wind turbine blades in order to ensure that plasma can be used on all types of wind turbine blades.

One another aim of the invention is to minimize the air resistance by 40% with the atmospheric plasma formation by the help of positioning plasma inside the blade.

Another aim of the invention is to convert the turbulence formation that, boosts air resistance by one third, to laminar status with the help of the formation of plasma sheath around the blades.

The plasma based actuators do not include any moving parts which assure that the invention is an ideal technology for wind turbine blades and this is among the aims of the invention.

The last but not least aim of the invention is to prevent icing problems with the help of air plasma formation on the blades that occurs in 30 ° C - 40 ° C temperature and this leads to efficient functioning of the turbine blade in all conditions.

In accordance with the mentioned aims, the invention resolves the negative aspects of the current structures and is directly related with the alternative energy supplier wind turbine blades that has wind turbine blade plasma positioning slit to form plasma on the turbine blade's leading edge and has electrodes inside for the formation of plasma whereas ensuring to control plasma gauge in different gas mediums by making it possible to change the distance between the electrodes inside the plasma positioning slit.

This invention in its present form and simple structure, will be a preferred product in the sector. Thus provide a commercial success.

Structural and characteristic features and all advantages of the invention will be understood more clearly with help of the following figures and detailed description written in reference to these figures. Therefore, this evaluation should be made by considering the drawings and related detailed description.

DETAILED EXPLANATION OF THE INVENTION

First, wind turbine blades (110) are produced according to the wind turbine (100). After that, to apply plasma (200) technique to the produced wind turbine blades (110), electrodes are inserted in the wind turbine blades (110). This invention ensures that the distance between electrodes that are used for plasma (200) formation, are changeable. In this way gauge of the plasma (200) can be checked in different gas medium so that plasma (200) formation can be provided in implementations and areas requiring higher plasma (200) gauge and electron concentration.

The effect of wind on wind turbine blades with existing techniques (10) is illustrated in Figure-1, the section of the wind turbine blade with existing technique(lO) is illustrated in Figure-2 and blade ascending force (FL), drag force (FD) and resultant force (F) and also fluid dispersion direction and leading angle are illustrated in Figure-3. Besides, the blade ascending force (FL), drag force (FD) and resultant force (F) that occurs on the wind turbine blades with existing technique (10), also air generates resistance on the leading edge (11) of the wind turbine blade with existing technique (10) in accordance with the movement speed of the wind turbine blade with existing technique (10). The resistance towards the leading edge (11) of the wind turbine blade with existing technique (10) obstructs the movement of the wind turbine blade with existing technique (10). In order to minimize the resistance effect towards the leading edge (11) of the wind turbine blade with existing technique (10) that occurs during the movement of the wind turbine blade with the existing technique (10) it was needed to insert plasma (200) into the leading edge (11) of the wind turbine blade with existing technique (10). With this aim, wind turbine plasma positioning slit (120) was opened on the leading edge (11) of the wind turbine blade with existing technique (10) and electrodes were inserted in it to ensure plasma (200) formation. In Figure-4, plasma (200) applied wind turbine blade (110) is illustrated.

In this invention, the air in the wind turbine blade is ionized and accelerated. This additional speed ensures additional boost, friction is reduced and with the ionized air flow inside the wind turbine blade (110), the ascending force (FL) that effects the wind turbine blade (110) is enhanced. Thus, efficiency is increased and the energy consumption is reduced.
