[Problem] To provide a pointer position detection method which makes it possible to correctly distinguish between a contact position of an active pen and a contact position of a passive pointer. [Solution] Provided is a pointer position detection method for detecting a position of a passive pointer which does not transmit a signal and a position of an active pen capable of transmitting a signal from a pen electrode provided to a tip portion thereof. The method includes: pen detection steps S2 to S4 for detecting a pen signal transmitted through the pen electrode, and detecting a pen position, which is the position of the active pen on the basis of a level of the detected pen signal; and touch detection steps S5 to S9 for detecting one or more candidate touch positions, which are candidates of the position of the passive pointer, respectively, by detecting a change in capacitance in a sensor pattern, and outputting, from among the one or more candidate touch positions, one or more candidate touch positions excluding the pen position described above as a passive pointer position, which is the position of the passive pointer.
