Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing a PBI carbon fiber that can be efficiently produced without requiring any infusibilizing treatment and has a high modulus of elasticity and a high strength, and a method for manufacturing the same. The PBI carbon fiber according to the present invention has a carbon fiber structure, said structure being obtained by heating a PBI-containing precursor fiber having a structural unit with a structure represented by general formula (1) or (2), and shows a tensile elastic modulus of 100 GPa or greater and a tensile strength of 0.8 GPa or greater. In general formulae (1) and (2): R1 and R3 represent a tri- or tetra-valent aryl group or unsaturated heterocyclic group represented by any of structural formulae (1) to (10) that are specified in claim 1; and R2 represents a divalent aryl group or unsaturated heterocyclic group represented by any of structural formulae (1) to (10) as described above, an alkenylene group having 2 to 4 carbon atoms, an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or a sulfonyl group.
