A printer, wherein in order to suppress increases in the width-direction size of the printer, and to prevent a take-up-side shaft from rotating in a direction opposite to the take-up side without providing additional space, the printer (100) comprises: a locking member (80) (limiting member) that opens and closes in relation to a body (10), the locking member (80) being provided to a cover (20) in which the takeup-side shaft (60) of an ink ribbon (2) is disposed, and the position of the locking member (80) changing in accordance with the open or closed state of the cover (20); and a ribbon flange (70) provided further axially inward than a takeup-side gear (61) (passive member) that is linked to the end of the shaft (60) and receives a drive force, the ribbon flange (70) rotating integrally with the shaft (60); the ribbon flange (70) having a cam surface (74) of which the radial-direction distance from the center axis (C) of the shaft (60) varies in response to the rotation angle position around the shaft (60); and the upper end part (83) of the locking member (80) contacting the cam surface (74) when the cover (20) is opened, and limiting the rotation of the ribbon flange (70).
