Abstract:
A process for extracting metals from laterite containing Ni and Co comprises
(1) mixing laterite with a sulphur-containing material selected from elemental
sulphur and metallic sulphide, calcining the obtained mixture in an oxidizing
atmosphere so as to convert the non-ferrous metals in the mixture into sulphates
thereof and convert iron into oxide; (2) leaching the calcined materials with
water so as to extract Ni and Co in the materials into the leaching liquor. A process
for calcining laterite containing Ni and Co comprises mixing laterite with a
sulphur-containing material selected from elemental sulphur and metallic
sulphide, and calcining the obtained mixture in an oxidizing atmosphere.
