Abstract:
Active carbon that is useful as a material of polarizable electrode of electric double layer capacitor can be obtained by mixing a carbon material with an alkali metal hydroxide while maintaining the solid state thereof, granulating the obtained mixture while maintaining the solid state, dehydrating the obtained granules while maintaining the solid state and activating the obtained granular dehydration product. In the step of granulation, preferred granulation pressure is in the range of 0.01 to 300 Torr and preferred granulation temperature is in the range of 90 to 140ºC. In the step of dehydration, preferred dehydration pressure is in the range of 0.01 to 10 Torr and preferred dehydration temperature is in the range of 200 to 400ºC.
