Title:
PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ISOCHROMAN COMPOUNDS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1996/035684
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A process for producing isochroman compounds which comprises the step of adding a 40 to 70 % by weight aqueous solution of formaldehyde to a Friedel-Crafts catalyst complex of an arylalkanol represented by general formula (II) to thereby cyclize the arylalkanol, wherein R1 and R2 represent each hydrogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy, or R1 and R2 are bonded respectively to the adjacent carbon atoms and to each other to thereby form together with the carbon atoms to which they are bonded a benzene or naphthalene ring or a C5-6 cycloalkane or cycloalkene optionally having lower (C1-6) alkyl; and R3 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl. The process can be effected simply and economically and gives the isochroman compounds with a high purity.
