Abstract:

A process for efficiently producing unsaturated alcohols from 'alpha','beta'-unsaturated aldehydes. The process comprises selectively reducing the aldehyde group of an 'alpha','beta'-unsaturated aldehyde with an aluminum alcoholate in the presence of a primary or s econdary alcohol bearing two to eight carbon atoms to give an unsaturated alcohol represented by general formula (III), and is characterized by carrying out the reaction in the presence of a proton acid wherein R represents an alkyl group bearing one to three carbon atoms.
