The present invention provides a projection-type display device, a control method for projection-type display device, and a control program for projection-type display device, whereby areas missing information can be made visible and cleaning is easy to perform. This HUD (100) being a projection-type display device comprises: a projection display unit (49) including a light modulation unit that spatially modulates light emitted from a light source, on the basis of input image information, projecting spatially modulated image light on to a windshield (2) of an automobile (1), and displaying an image on the basis of the image light; a case (3) housing the projection display unit and having an opening (K) from which the image light is emitted; a cover (9) that blocks the opening (K); a region detection unit (47B) that detects object-adhered regions (91) in which an object is adhered, on the cover; and a display control unit (47A) that controls image information input to the light modulation unit and controls the image displayed by the projection display unit. The display control unit causes the projection display unit to display an outline (21) of the object-adhered region.
