Abstract:

A PTC thermistor which uses a conductive polymer having a positive temperature coefficient characteristic and has a high withstand voltage and high reliability and in which no disconnection occurs in side-face electrode layers by cracking even when a mechanical stress occurs due to a thermal shock by repeated thermal expansions of the conductive polymer sheet and a method for manufacturing the thermistor. The thermistor is provided with a laminated body formed by alternately piling conductive polymer sheets and inner-layer electrodes upon other, outer-layer electrodes provided on both the top and bottom faces of the laminated body, and the multilayered side-face electrode layers provided at the centers of the side faces of the laminated body so as to electrically connect the inner-layer electrodes to the outer-layer electrodes so that the side faces of the laminated body can be composed of the parts where the side-face electrode layers are formed and the other parts where no side-face electrode layer is formed. In the method for manufacturing the thermistor, in addition, the laminated body is formed by putting metallic foil on the upper and lower surfaces of a conductive polymer sheet and integrating the foil and sheet in one body by heating and pressurizing. Then conductive polymer sheets are respectively put on the upper and lower surfaces of the formed laminated body and, after metallic foil is put on the upper surface of the upper polymer sheet and the lower surface of the lower polymer sheet, the foil and sheets are integrated with the formed laminated body by heating and pressurizing. This process is repeated until the required laminated body is formed.
