Provided are devices and a method that implement robust display control for TTML subtitle data. A DDB message containing TTML subtitle data and a DII message containing subtitle-data control information or the like are transmitted from a transmission device to a reception device as a TS packet as defined by MPEG-2TS. The reception device performs subtitle display control using the DII message and the TTML subtitle data in the DDB message. The DII message defines, for example, a time mode (TMD), i.e. a mode for controlling the subtitle-display timing, or an operating mode (OPM) that selectively executes real-time subtitle display, display according to TTML markup, or the like. This allows the reception device to perform display control in accordance with the mode specified in the DII.
