Abstract:
In the present invention, the level of degradation of each physical recording region in non-volatile memory is evaluated without halting a recording device. The recording device is provided with a controller and non-volatile memory having a plurality of physical recording regions. The controller calculates the level of degradation of each of a plurality of specific physical recording regions by performing an evaluation process for a subset of the plurality of specific physical recording regions, which are among the plurality of physical recording regions, at a time for all of the plurality of specific physical recording regions, and determines whether or not to use the corresponding physical recording region on the basis of the calculated levels of degradation. In the evaluation process, the controller selects a subset of the plurality of specific physical recording regions as a physical recording region group in accordance with a predetermined sequence of physical recording regions, writes predetermined evaluation data to the physical recording region group, and after a recorded standing time has elapsed, reads the evaluation data from the physical recording region group, and calculates the level of degradation on the basis of the read evaluation data.
