Abstract:
Disclosed is a retardation film which enables to obtain a polarizing plate having
excellent durability and view angle compensation function by being used as a
polarizing plate protection film. Specifically disclosed is a retardation
film comprising an optically anisotropic film wherein the refractive index
nx in the in-plane slow axis direction and the refractive index ny in the in-plane
fast axis direction satisfy the following relation of nx > ny, and a retardation
layer formed on the optically anisotropic film and containing a liquid crystal
material, in which retardation layer the refractive indexes nx and ny in arbitrary
x and y directions perpendicular to each other in the in-plane direction and the
refractive index nz in the thickness direction satisfy the following relation
of nx ≤ ny < nz. This retardation film is characterized in that a transparent
substrate composed of a cellulose derivative is used for the optically anisotropic
film.
