The present invention addresses the problem of improving the silica-dispersing properties of a rubber composition which includes a styrene/butadiene rubber produced by emulsion polymerization and natural rubber and of providing: a rubber composition for tire treads which gives tires excellent in terms of compression set resistance, fuel efficiency performance, and grip performance; and a pneumatic tire obtained using the rubber composition. The rubber composition for tire treads according to the present invention comprises diene-based rubbers, silica, and a silane coupling agent, wherein the diene-based rubbers comprise natural rubber and a modified polymer obtained by modifying an emulsion-polymerization styrene/butadiene rubber with a carboxylated nitrone compound, the degree of modification thereof being 0.02-4.0 mol%, the content of the modified polymer in the diene-based rubbers being 10-90 mass% and the content of the natural rubber in the diene-based rubbers being 10-90 mass%, and the silica is contained in an amount of 60-140 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of the diene-based rubbers.
