A method for operating a smart electric heating appliance of the present invention may comprise the steps of: upon detecting contact of a control switch provided on the smart electric heating appliance, collecting a result of receiving a first reflected light reflected and returned from an object after irradiating, in a first direction, first irradiated light irradiated by a first sensor provided on the bottom of a top plate of the smart electric heating appliance; analyzing a distance from the top plate to the object on the basis of the first reflected light compared to the first irradiated light, so as to determine whether the contact of the control switch is an operation command; and according to the determination on whether the contact of the control switch is the operation command, disallowing or allowing generation of an operation command corresponding to the contact of the control switch.
