When a storage controller performs a rebuild process, a large load is imposed on the storage controller, since in that case the storage controller must handle intensive processing. The storage unit according to the present invention is provided with a plurality of storage devices that form a RAID group, that are connected to the same bus, and that communicate with each other. Each of the plurality of storage devices has a device controller and a storage medium. The plurality of storage devices collectively store a plurality of pieces of data and parities that are generated based on the plurality of pieces of data, each of the plurality of pieces of data, and each of the parities being included in a respective one of the RAID stripes of the RAID group. A first device controller of a first storage device in the RAID group transmits, to the plurality of storage devices in the RAID group other than the first storage device, an instruction to transfer a plurality of pieces of data and/or the parity included in a RAID stripe to the first storage device, and restores the piece of data or parity in the first storage device that forms a part of the RAID stripe, on the basis of the transferred plurality of pieces of data and the transferred parity (if any).
