Abstract:
In this surface-coated cutting tool, a coating layer has a composite nitride layer or composite carbonitride layer of V and Al, the average layer thickness of which is 1.0 to 20.0 μm and in which when the composition is expressed as (V1-xAlx)(CyN1-y), the average content ratio of x, xavg, is from 0.76 to 0.95, and the average content ratio of y, yavg, is from 0.000 to 0.015, the coating layer having crystal grains of composite nitride or composite carbonitride with an NaCl-type face-centered cubic structure. In frequency distributions in each of divisions of inclination angle distributions obtained by dividing, every 0.25 degrees, inclination angles that are in the range of 0 to 45 degrees, among inclination angles formed by the directions normal to the respective {111} planes of the crystal grains with respect to the direction normal to the surface of a tool base, a highest frequency is present in any of the divisions for 0 to 10 degrees, and the sum of the frequency distributions in the divisions for the 0 to 10 degrees accounts for 45% or more of the sum of the frequency distributions for all the inclination angles.
