A continuously variable transmission (1) includes a valve (64) for adjusting an axial direction position of a spool in such a way that a hydraulic pressure corresponding to a command pressure is generated, wherein a CVTECU (7) of the continuously variable transmission (1) is equipped with a valve inspecting unit (75) for inspecting whether the valve (64) is an acceptable product that operates normally. The valve inspecting unit (75) is provided with: a pressure regulation failure detecting unit (76) for detecting a pressure regulation failure of the valve (64); a foreign body removal operation control unit (77) for performing a foreign body removal operation by causing the spool to reciprocate temporarily if a pressure regulation failure is detected; and a pass/fail determining unit (78) which determines that the valve (64) is an acceptable product if the foreign body removal operation eliminates the pressure regulation failure, and determines that the valve (64) is an unacceptable product if the pressure regulation failure is not eliminated even after the foreign body removal operation has been performed.
