The present invention relates to: a variable valve timing control device for changing the valve timing of an internal combustion engine; and a control method. An operation amount for controlling valve timing is calculated, and the operation amount calculated at a position-detection timing for a variable valve timing mechanism is divided and outputted in a time period until the next position-detection timing.
