Abstract:
Provided is a vehicle communication system that is not only free of cases in which a portable device outside the passenger compartment is falsely detected as being inside the passenger compartment but can also reliably detect when the portable device is inside the passenger compartment. The vehicle communication system is provided with an in-vehicle device (1) and a portable device (2). The in-vehicle device (1) transmits signals from a plurality of transmission antennas (3) provided on a vehicle (C). The portable device (2) measures the received signal strength of the signals transmitted from each of the plurality of transmission antennas (3) and transmits a response signal containing the received signal strength for each signal. The in-vehicle device (1) receives the response signal. The in-vehicle device (1) stores narrow space information pertaining to a narrow space that fits within the passenger compartment (R) and wide space information pertaining to a wide space encompassing the entire passenger compartment (R) and selects the narrow space information or the wide space information according to the situation. In addition, the in-vehicle device (1) determines whether the portable device (2) is in the passenger compartment on the basis of the selected narrow space information or wide space information and the received signal strength contained in the response signal.
