Abstract:
The present invention makes it possible to increase a sense of brightness and to achieve high-contrast video representation by stretching and increasing the brightness of a light source and reducing the brightness of a video signal in non-light-emitting sections to enhance and prominently display the display brightness of a light-emitting section. The present invention also makes it possible to achieve the same video representation even if black band areas are present in the video, and inhibits misadjusted black level in the black band areas. In a video display device, a light-emission detection unit (2) detects, as a light-emitting section, a superior region in a prescribed range of a histogram of an input video signal, an area-active control/brightness stretching unit (5) stretches and increases the brightness of a light source, and a mapping unit (3) reduces the brightness of the video signal in non-light-emitting sections, thereby enhancing the display brightness of the light-emitting section. In this video display device, the histogram acquisition size is modified in accordance with the size of black band areas detected by a black-band detection unit (4), and the degree of enhancement is controlled so as to be lower in cases when black band areas are present than in cases when black band areas are not present.
