Abstract:
This virtual image display device comprises: a backlight (31) that provides illumination light; and an image display panel (21) that transmits the illumination light and displays, on a display screen (22), an image formed as a virtual image. The backlight has: light source units (32, 332) that emit the illumination light toward the image display panel; and deflection prism arrays (36, 236) that are arranged on optical paths between the light source units and the image display panel and are formed by arranging deflection prism elements (36a, 236a) for deflecting the illumination light from the light source units while transmitting the illumination light. The deflection prism array deflects a direction (DS2) of a vector (S2) immediately after the transmission with respect to a direction (DS1) of a vector (S1) immediately before the transmission. The deflection prism array is configured such that an angle formed between a unit normal vector (Ns) of the display screen and the vector immediately after the transmission is larger than an angle formed between the unit normal vector of the display screen and the vector immediately before the transmission.
