Abstract:
Provided are: a viscosity modifier for an aqueous resin with which the used amount of a neutralizing base in the viscosity modifier can be reduced, and which has excellent viscosity-imparting and pseudoplasticity-imparting effects and thermal stability, and can exhibit these effects in a wide pH range from acidity to basicity; and an aqueous paint composition comprising said viscosity modifier. This viscosity modifier for an aqueous resin contains: a viscosity imparting component (X) which contains 1-30 mass% of a diamide compound (A) obtained by reacting a diamine component (A1) selected from the group consisting of C2-C12 diamines with a monocarboxylic acid component (A2) selected from the group consisting of monocarboxylic acids having at least a hydroxyl group, and/or hydrogenated castor oil (A'); and 5-99 mass% of a first solvent (C) which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyl group, an ether group, an ester group, an amide group, and a ketone group.
