Provided is a water purification device that has high purification capabilities with respect to a variety of hydraulic pressures and a variety of degrees of contamination, that can regenerate activated carbon with high efficiency, and with which running costs can be greatly reduced. This water purification device is provided with a ceramic treatment tank that accommodates spherical ceramics in an amount that can be accommodated in 60 - 80% of the volume thereof and in which water to be treated is made to flow from bottom to top, and an activated carbon treatment tank that has an activated carbon accommodating part for accommodating particulate or powdered and mineral based activated carbon in an amount that can be accommodated in 60 - 80% of the volume thereof and in which water to be treated that has passed through the ceramic treatment tank is made to flow. Furthermore, during a water purification mode, raw water is made to flow from bottom to top in the ceramic treatment tank and then flow from top to bottom in the activated carbon accommodating part, after which the water is guided to the outside from the activated carbon treatment tank as purified water. In addition, during a reverse cleaning mode, purified water, which is stored in a water retention tank, is made to flow from bottom to top in the ceramic treatment tank and then flow from bottom to top in the activated carbon accommodating part.
