Abstract:
In a wavelength conversion element using the nonlinear optical effect, an unintended slab waveguide can be incidentally formed when preparing an array waveguide including a target nonlinear waveguide. Slab waveguides induce erroneous measurements when selecting a waveguide with desirable characteristics from an array waveguide. The erroneous measurements require the process of manufacturing a wavelength conversion element to be repeated, which reduces yield and hinders the evaluation of waveguide properties when selecting a waveguide and the subsequent efficient preparation of the wavelength conversion element. The wavelength conversion element according to the present invention is provided with a plurality of waveguides prepared on a substrate with a plurality of slab waveguides provided away from and roughly parallel to each of the plurality of waveguides; each slab waveguide has a grating structure for reflecting light of a specific wavelength. The grating structure serves to efficiently select a waveguide with desirable optical characteristics from among the plurality of waveguides.
